Poker Side Pots Explained
Poker is typically played 'table stakes', meaning only the chips in play at the beginning of each hand may be used throughout the hand. The table stakes rule has an application called the 'All-In' rule, which states that a player cannot be forced to forfeit a hand because the player does not have enough chips to call a bet.
A side pot occurs in a game in which there are more than two players left in the hand, and one player has bet all the chips they have in front of them (is all-in). When one player is all-in, the other two may continue to bet between themselves.

- Players A and B each have $200 and player C has $100. If player C goes all in and is called by both other players, the pot will be $300, which is the maximum amount that player C can win. If the other two players decide to bet their remaining $100, a new pot containing only $200 will be created. The side pot of $200 can be won only by players A.
- It's one of the first things you learn when playing tournament poker: don't bet into a dry side-pot. People say that if you and an opponent see the flop when a third player is all-in, you shouldn't normally bet - because it's more important to eliminate the all-in player than win a few extra chips. This has become one a common fallacy in poker.
When making side pots start with the player with the fewest chips. That will be the main pot. Be sure to add in the small and big blinds. When Paying the pots start with the most chips and work in. (Side pot 3,2,1, Main pot) Often the player with most chips wins everything.
These additional bets are 'on the side', between the remaining two players.
The player who is all-in and has no more chips is ineligible to win any of these additional bets, since he is not risking an equitable amount of chips.
